Australian Crossbred Wool: Giving Wool Another Chapter

When most people think of Australian wool, they think of Merino wool.

But there is another Australian wool story worth knowing - crossbred wool.

At ZIAKE, we believe Australian crossbred wool can be used for much more than its traditional applications. We're giving this versatile natural fibre another chapter through timeless clothing and everyday accessories.

What is Australian crossbred wool?

Australian crossbred wool is predominantly produced within the prime lamb and meat sheep industry.

While Merino sheep are renowned for their fine, soft wool, crossbred wool generally has stronger and more broader fibres. It has traditionally been used in products such as carpets, rugs, bedding and upholstery.

We see an opportunity to value-add to this Australian wool resource and showcase its versatility in fashion and everyday life.

Crossbred Wool vs Merino Wool

Both are natural Australian wool fibres, but they have different characteristics.

Merino wool is known for its exceptionally fine, soft fibres and is widely used in premium clothing and garments worn next to the skin.

Crossbred wool is generally stronger and more broader, making it well suited to products where durability is important.

At ZIAKE, we don't believe one is better than the other. We believe both have a place, and Australian crossbred wool deserves more recognition.

Why choose wool?

Wool is a natural, renewable and biodegradable fibre. Sheep grow a new fleece each year, making wool a renewable natural resource.

Unlike synthetic fibres, wool isn't manufactured from plastic-based, fossil-fuel-derived materials.

Choosing natural fibres such as wool can help reduce our reliance on synthetic materials and the microplastics associated with synthetic textiles.

For ZIAKE, it's also about creating products that are made to be used, loved and kept for longer.

Designed for life, not landfill

We don't want ZIAKE to be another throw-away fashion brand.

Our products are designed to have a longer first life — to be cared for, enjoyed and used for years rather than constantly replaced.

But we also think about what happens when that first life comes to an end.

The ZIAKE End Game

Every ZIAKE product has an 'End Game'.

When a product has reached the end of its first chapter, we encourage you to deconstruct it and consider what each material can become next.

It may be possible to repair, reuse, repurpose, upcycle or recycle different components. Natural wool and cotton may, where appropriate and once separated from other materials, have another life in the garden.

Our goal is simple: Keep materials in use for longer and reduce what goes into landfill.

Giving Australian wool another chapter

ZIAKE was founded in Hamilton, Victoria, with our connection to Australian agriculture and wool growers throughout South West Victoria central to what we do.

We're passionate about showing that Australian crossbred wool can be more than carpets, bedding and upholstery.

It can become something you wear, carry, use and love.

And when its first purpose is finished, it doesn't necessarily have to be thrown away.

Deconstruct it. Repurpose it. Give it another chapter.
